Breathe Easy, Hear Safe: Protecting Your Nose, Throat, Sinuses, and Ears This Diwali

Firecrackers can produce sounds over 120 decibels — here's how to protect your hearing and airways this Diwali.

Diwali brings joy, lights, and celebration — but the smoke from firecrackers and pollution spikes it causes can take a real toll on your nose, throat, sinuses, and ears.

Firecrackers can produce sounds over 120 decibels, well above the level that can damage hearing. Keep a distance of 100 to 150 feet from fireworks, and use ear protection where possible, especially for children.

Smoke and particulate pollution irritate the nasal passages and sinuses, worsening allergies and triggering sinusitis. Rinsing the nose with saline after exposure and staying indoors during peak smoke hours helps a great deal.

Sore throats are common during Diwali due to smoke inhalation. Warm fluids, steam inhalation, and avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure protect the throat.

If you or a family member experiences ringing in the ears, sudden hearing changes, persistent nasal blockage, or throat pain after Diwali, get an ENT check-up promptly.
